Ballet is the foundation for most of today’s performance dance. Ballet establishes a basic understanding of correct body placement and alignment which becomes increasingly important as a dancer becomes more advanced. In ballet class, the dancer begins structured learning of ballet positions, placement, and movements. Ballet is very important for developing coordination, flexibility, and strength. In the more advanced ballet classes, emphasis is placed on increasing the complexity of turns and progressions, as well as greater focus on lines, precision, flexibility, and strength.
Ballet is available to ages 2 and up. Princess Ballerina classes are considered pre-ballet.
Tap explores the variety of movement and sounds dancers can create with small metal taps attached to their shoes. The class focuses on understanding rhythm and more intricate movement with the dancer’s feet. Tap is fun for all ages.
Tap is available to ages 3 and up.
Jazz showcases a dancers individual style and personality while remaining energetic and fun. It combines strong technique with originality and requires a versatile dancer with a great attitude. Some jazz dance styles that will be explored during class include: Jazz funk, Contemporary and Broadway.
Jazz is available to ages 5 and up.
Modern Dance is one of the newer developed styles of dance, becoming popular in the early 1900s. Modern explores movement outside of the rigid constraints of classical ballet. It focuses on creativity instead of perfect technique. Modern is a relaxed style of dance that allows the dancer to self-express through movement.
Modern is available to ages 12 and up.
Lyrical is a beautiful movement style that blends ballet and jazz dance. Lyrical dancers use their bodies to express strong emotion such as love, joy and anger. Dancers perform to music with lyrics which serve as inspiration for their choreography and expression. Music used for lyrical is typically emotionally charged and expressive.
Lyrical is available to ages 7 and up.
Contemporary is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet. Contemporary dancers strive to connect their mind body through a wide variety of dance movement.
Contemporary dance stresses versatility and improvisation, unlike the strict, structured nature of ballet. Contemporary dancers focus on floorwork, using gravity to pull them down to the floor.
Contemporary is available to ages 12 and up.
